Student Activities and Athletes’ Code of Conduct

Conduct

Participation on a Huron Heights team is a privilege and therefore participating athletes are expected to conduct themselves as suitable ambassadors for their school. If students do not conduct themselves appropriately they can expect consequences for their actions. Every Huron Heights student is responsible for his/her conduct at a school event.

Huron Heights’ athletes are expected to display good sportsmanship at all times. Good sportsmanship means showing respect to teammates, coaches, opposing players, officials and spectators.

Academics

All athletes must be enrolled in a full-time program. They are expected to be conscientious students and good citizens of the school.

Sport–related absences are considered to be valid absences. However, athletes must communicate their absences to their classroom teachers at least a day in advance of the event (especially if students will miss scheduled assessments or class activities). Work missed for any school activity must be completed to the subject teacher’s satisfaction.

Attendance

In order to play, athletes are expected to attend all classes on game days. Absences (doctor appointments etc.) on game days are valid only if the coach has been notified in advance and if the absence has been validated in the attendance office.

Commitment

Once the commitment to a school team has been made, a player must follow through with his/her commitment to the team. It is unfair to teammates and coaches to leave a team mid–season. It is also unfair to other aspiring players who haven’t earned a place on that team.

Any player who quits a school team during the season, or is removed by the coach for reasons such as lack of commitment or poor behaviour, will meet with the coach and an administrator to discuss the situation. As a result the player may be ineligible to play for up to one calendar year.

Any student absences from practices or games must be discussed with the coach beforehand or as soon after the absence as possible.

Excessive absences could lead to removal from a school team, at the discretion of the coach and the administration.

Athletes may resign from a team without penalty, before the commitment date–as specified by the coach. Under exceptional circumstances, arrangements can be made for a player to leave a team without penalty, pending approval of the coach, the department head, and the administration.

Transportation

Athletes must follow school rules when being transported to or when visiting other schools. Students must travel in vehicles arranged by the school, unless otherwise approved by school officials in advance.

Uniforms

Team uniforms will be provided for all participating students and they are to be worn exclusively for team activities. At the end of the season uniforms are to be washed and returned in good condition. Students will be responsible for the cost of any damaged or missing uniforms.

Injuries

Athletes are expected to report all injuries immediately to their coaches.

Valuables

Players are responsible for the safekeeping of their personal belongings during practices, games, or field trips. Do not leave any valuables in the change room at any time. The WRDSB does not cover loss of, or damage to, personal articles.

Smoking

Players are encouraged not to smoke or use tobacco products. Athletes are expected to refrain from smoking or using tobacco products during sports seasons. Smoking at an event or activity is strictly forbidden.
