The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) school and office buildings will be flying the Canadian flag at half-mast to mark the loss of the Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair, who passed away on November 4, 2024.

A former member of Canada’s Senate, Justice Sinclair was a leading legal scholar, one of Canada’s first Indigenous judges and the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC).

Justice Sinclair’s legacy is profound; one that calls us into right relations with one another, to work collectively to further support education, understanding and walk together on a path of healing and truth.

Justice Sinclair always acknowledged the critical role of education in reconciliation efforts noting that “Education got us into this mess and education will get us out of it.”

The WRDSB is committed to the work of Truth and Reconciliation and will continue to strive to uphold the Calls to Action. Most importantly, today and moving forward, we will continue to reflect on what it means to be good ancestors each and every day.

To honour Justice Sinclair and the significant work he led in moving all Canadians toward fulfilling the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and to remind us of our responsibilities as treaty people, the flags at all WRDSB schools and buildings will be lowered and remain at half-mast until the end of the day on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
