Instrumental (Band) Music at HHSS
The focus of all instrumental (band) music courses at Huron Heights is to help students learn how to read music and understand various musical styles while performing, creating, listening, analyzing and reflecting on exciting repertoire. Students will also develop their technical performance skills as they learn to play their chosen instruments, whether in a full class, small group, or individual performance setting. Optional extra-curricular opportunities include: Junior Band, Jazz Band, and Senior Concert Band.
Grade 9 students have two instrumental music course options to choose from:
- AMU1OI (Grade 9 Instrumental – Beginner) – This course is meant for students who have no experience on a band instrument or students who wish to learn a new band instrument.
- AMI1OI (Grade 9 Instrumental – Experienced) – This course is designed for students who have one or more years of experience on their current band instrument.
Additional instrumental music course options:
- AMU2OI (Grade 10 Instrumental – Beginner) – This course is meant for students who have no experience on a band instrument or students who wish to learn a new band instrument.
- AMI2OI (Grade 10 Instrumental – Experienced) – This course is a continuation of AMI1OI (Grade 9 Instrumental – Experienced), AMU1OI (Grade 9 Instrumental – Beginner), and AMU2OI (Grade 10 Instrumental – Beginner).
- AMI3MI (Grade 11 Instrumental – Experienced) – This course is a continuation of AMI2OI (Grade 10 Instrumental – Experienced).
- AMI4MI (Grade 12 Instrumental – Experienced) – This course is a continuation of AMI3MI (Grade 11 Instrumental – Experienced).
Vocal Music at HHSS
The focus of all vocal music courses at Huron Heights is to help students learn how to read vocal/choral music and understand various musical styles while performing, creating, listening, analyzing and reflecting on exciting repertoire. Students will also develop their technical performance skills as they learn to sing, whether in a full class, small group, or individual performance setting. Optional extra-curricular opportunities include: Concert Choir and Pop Choir.
Vocal Music Course Options:
- AMV1OI (Grade 9 Vocal – Open/Beginner) – This course is at a level suitable for both beginning and experienced singers. No previous musical experience is necessary.
- AMV2OI (Grade 10 Vocal – Open) – This course is a continuation of AMV1OI (Grade 9 Vocal – Open/Beginner).
- AMV3MI (Grade 11 Vocal – Experienced) – This course is a continuation of AMV2OI (Grade 10 Vocal – Open).
- AMV4MI (Grade 12 Vocal – Experienced) – This course is a continuation of AMV3MI (Grade 11 Vocal – Experienced).
Guitar at HHSS
The focus of all guitar courses at Huron Heights is to teach students how to play the guitar using popular forms and techniques. Students will be provided with a steel string acoustic guitar and introduced to notation as it applies to the guitar. They will learn to navigate their way across the fret-board and play exciting songs in a number of genres (including rock, folk, jazz, metal, and the blues). Opportunities to compose, record, and practice general guitar maintenance will be offered. Optional extra-curricular opportunities include: MYART (Musical Youth Articulating Raw Talent).
Guitar Courses:
- AMG3OI (Grade 11 Guitar – Open/Beginner) – This course is designed to introduce any student to guitar playing. No previous musical experience is necessary.
- AMG4MI (Grade 12 Guitar – Experienced) – This course is a continuation of AMG3OI (Grade 11 Guitar – Open/Beginner).
