To our Huron Heights SS students and families,

I want to address a serious situation involving students from our school.

On Monday, February 18, school staff became aware of a number of inappropriate and disturbing social media posts of a racially motivated nature.  Every one of our students has the right to feel safe in their school environment and this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

We take these incidents very seriously and are investigating the situation fully. Social media posts or messages like this are never appropriate and never funny. Our priority is to ensure that our schools remain safe places where all students experience a caring learning environment that addresses their well-being. We also know that these posts do not reflect the values and attitudes of our students and school community.

School board staff called a meeting immediately on Tuesday morning and have been working together with the Waterloo Regional Police Service to determine the most appropriate course of action. At this time, it has been recommended that the students believed to be involved in this incident stay at home indefinitely while we identify potential disciplinary steps under the guidance of Ontario Safe Schools Legislation and associated policies and procedures.

We wish to express our disappointment with this conduct as we have made great strides to focus on inclusion, acceptance and respect at Huron Heights. The actions of a few students do not define us as a school community. We are proud of the students that brought this issue forward and their refusal to allow it to continue.

We will always take whatever precaution is necessary to ensure the safety of our students and staff. Please feel free to call the Huron Heights Administration at 519-896-2631 with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Jeff Klinck

Principal
